The basic function of the Plant Buyer is purchasing, inventory documentation and special order tracking of live plant goods. The Plant Buyer maintains product catalogs, price lists, and announcements, and sells floor-stocked products to meet company objectives.


  • Purchase plants for stock and special orders.
  • Maintain plant pricing and compare costs between vendors. 
  • Suggest new retail pricing at the beginning of each calendar year.
  • Keep accurate files of plant special orders.
  • Pull plant special orders from plant stock orders.
  • Notify customer of plant special order arrival. 
  • Keeping current on the market, market trends, and industry developments in the gardening, landscape and horticulture industry.
  • Maintain current, in-depth knowledge of all the company’s products and their applications.
  • Create appropriate signage for plants and promotions. 
  • Contribute to the garden center newsletter.
  • Teach garden center seminars
  • Water plants as needed.
  • Floor sales, customer service, cashier.
  • Respond to customer inquiries promptly.
  • Addressing the needs of customers and prospects, both in person and over the phone.
  • Follow up on sales leads as directed.
  • Take orders by phone, fax, mail, or in person.
  • Work harmoniously and productively with other sales personnel and other departments in fulfilling Company commitments.
  • Produce timely, accurate sales and other reports as required.
  • Understand costs, pricing, and overhead as percent of sales.
  • Recommend input for company merchandising targets, pricing, new products, services.
  • Develop effective product knowledge of all areas of the garden department and become cross-trained to be able to provide the maximum benefits and service to the company’s customers.
  • Responsible for seeing that the stock layout is orderly, and housekeeping is completed on a regular basis.
  • Assist in the proper receiving and stocking of plants.
  • Be able to deliver products if necessary.
  • Relate to the customer in a professional and courteous manner whether through direct contact or by phone, making certain to determine what the customer wants.
  • Analyze and take care of customer needs.  Serve the customer on the floor when necessary. Provide customer with appropriate receipt for each transaction.
  • Locate necessary products.
  • Quote pre-established prices to customers, prospects, phone inquiries, etc.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping throughout the garden.
  • Attend store meetings and training sessions, help train new Garden Representative or Plant Buyers.
  • Maintain up-to-date information necessary to run and operate the floor area successfully and notify Garden Department Manager of any problems.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Garden Department Manager.


  • Plant knowledge and identification of plants appropriate for growing in Napa Valley
  • Horticultural knowledge – plant care, soil, fertilizer, pest ID and control.
  • Landscape/garden design basics


  • 4 year degree in Horticulture or related field
  • Or 4 years of work in a retail or wholesale garden center/nursery
  • Buying/purchasing experience is preferred, but not required
