January in Your Garden

  1. Collect rainwater

    in barrels or garbage cans to use in spring for watering your garden. We sell 55 gallon used food grade barrels here.

  2. Check for and correct drainage issues

    in your garden. Look for clogged pots and standing water.

  3. Replant winter veggies as needed.

    Fill in with lettuces, chard, kale and others.

  4. Plant seed potatoes.

    We have a wide variety in stock. If you have never grown potatoes, it is simple, fun and rewarding.

  5. Plan your spring garden

    – shop for seeds, sketch out garden plans. 

  6. Spray fruit trees, roses and deciduous shrubs

    with All Seasons Horticultural and Dormant Spray Oil to smother overwintering insects.

  7. Keep bird feeders full

    for birds that don’t migrate.
     

  8. Continue to watch for frost

    and cover your tender plants such as citrus, bougainvillea, etc with N-Sulate fabric and/or spray with Wilt Stop.

  9. Prune roses.

  10. Look for signs of stressed indoor plants.

    Constant dry heat from heaters can increase their water needs.

  12. Control snails and slugs

    with Sluggo.

  13. Add annual color

    to perk up the cold wet days. Winter annual color such as pansies, violas, primrose, cyclamen, ornamental cabbage and kale, Iceland poppies will keep your garden colorful through April. Remember to occasionally deadhead to keep the blooms coming. 

  14. Plant bare root fruit trees and berries.

    Planting bare root saves money, reduces transplant shock and there is a wide selection to choose from.

  15. Say goodbye

     to plants that aren’t thriving and make room for healthier plants.

  16. Plant bare root asparagus, horseradish, and rhubarb.

    These perennial vegetables will bring you years of bountiful harvests.

  17. Move flowering holiday plants to a sheltered outdoor location

    until you are ready to give them a more permanent home. Move live trees outside and give them a deep soaking of water.

  18. Spray roses with Liqui-Cop

    as a dormant season spray to help prevent diseases in spring.
